As a Psychotherapist/Counsellor, the question of who is speaking always raises the greater question of who is able to listen? Listening is a very important aspect of my relationship with my clients, the voices of those who feel marginalised and disenfranchised are especially important as those voices are the ones which are unheard or ignored. If I am to adhere ethically to the guidelines of social justice, equity and non oppressive practice I feel that it is important for me to not only listen but for me to have a “cultural literacy and competence” in my practice which demonstrates a knowledge of what is like to be the the other to help improve the efficacy of my practice, and improve the experience of counselling for my clients.
Within my work as a therapist it is not unusual to meet clients who struggle with their identity or who do not feel part of the mainstream or dominant society. However clients from a different cultural background are often disproportionately represented specifically when combining issues of identity and exclusion with issues of race, culture, beliefs, values and personal power or authority.
Intercultural therapy takes all of these elements as well external realities such as poverty, refugee status, sexism, physical health and abilities into consideration, and enables me as a therapist to work across diversity, finding a common psychotherapeutic language, which attempts to bridge the divide between Western approaches and definitions of human experiencing and mental health, with client-centric orientations and their own understanding and meaning of mental health, psychological stress and coping strategies.

- Relationship
- Poor Self Esteem

Free First Meeting
I appreciate that for some people this can be the hardest part,. Discussing your most personal worries and concerns with someone who is effectively a stranger to you can be a big barrier to starting therapy and preventing you from getting the help you need. For this reason I offer a free 30min complimentary first meeting so that you can ask any questions that you may have to help you towards that first step.
If at this meeting you decide that you would like us to work together and that you are happy to move forwards an Initial Assessment will be booked for you. Whilst your reasons for seeking therapy will be discussed informally at this meeting it does not replace the need for you to have an Initial Assessment where a full history is taken.
Simply state that you would like to book a ‘Free First Meeting’ when contacting me by using the contact form on this website.
